Due to people's perception of Yemen being a poor country of only terrorism and kidnappings, tourists are few and far between. Only the occasional German or Spanish tour group disturbs the scenery. Contrary to what one may believe, Yemen is a beautiful mix of green and fertile mountains, humid coastlines and endless deserts. The people of Yemen are reserved and extremely hospitable at the same time and traveling there is being cast back to something aproximating the Middle Ages, if you disregard the traffic and automatic rifles that is. I've studied Arabic in Yemen on two occasions, and the photos on the left are from both the summer of 2002 and the summer of 2005. For the record: None of the people photographed are doing anything illegal. Chewing qat is not illegal in Yemen and neither is carrying weapons..
